A Short History Of Limeni Village

Although small, Limeni has a fascinating history. It is the home of the Mavromichalides family, a hegemonic family who ruled over the island and were considered important in the 1821 Greek liberation struggle and Greek politics.

In the 14th century, the Turks moved to conquer the East Trace region, and at that time, many Greek families tried to escape. Many took to boats and headed over to Mani. One child arrived on the island’s shores and was picked up by the locals. The boy was called Michalis, but the locals called him Mavromichalis because of the terrible ordeal he had been through.

That boy went on to become part of the founding family of Mani.

How To Get To The Village Of Limeni

Most people will try to visit Limeni from Athens, home of the largest international airport in Greece. You can quickly get over to the mainland via domestic flight or ferry. However, if you’re starting your journey from another spot, remember that ferries between Greek islands are plentiful during the summer and a great way to see more.

However, let’s suppose you’re in Athens. The bus is probably the easiest way to get to Limeni, which will take around 6.5 hours. The bus leaves the central station in Athens and heads to Sparti, where you will change for another service to Areopoli, the capital of the Mani region. Limeni is a short distance away from Areopoli, and there are regular buses and taxis.

The other option is to rent a car and drive. This is a beautiful way to experience the passing landscapes, and it will take you far less time – around 3.5 hours, with a distance of 295km.

Alternatively, you could fly to Kalamata Airport via a domestic flight and then drive or take a bus, which will take around 2 hours.
