Zagreb is a great city-break base in Croatia, and where you stay makes a big difference to how easy the trip feels—especially if you want to walk everywhere, lean into café-and-bar nights, or keep things quiet for kids.
I’ve stayed in Zagreb multiple times (including at the Esplanade and DoubleTree). This guide breaks down the best areas to stay in Zagreb by neighborhood—Lower Town vs. Upper Town, Kaptol, Britanski Trg, Jarun, and Maksimir—and maps each area to specific hotels, apartments, and hostels across luxury, mid-range, and budget options.

| Area | Best For | What To Expect |
|---|---|---|
| Lower Town (Donji Grad) | First-timers, easy transport, central sightseeing | Flat streets, trams, museums, shopping corridors, and quick access to the main square |
| Upper Town (Gornji Grad) | Historic atmosphere, evening strolls | Older streets, steps, and some hills, close to major viewpoints and landmarks |
| Kaptol | Cathedral area, walkable access to the core | Historic religious center; easy walk into the main sightseeing area |
| British Square (Britanski Trg) | Markets, antiques browsing, local feel | Neighborhood vibe with good connections to Upper and Lower Town |
| Jarun | Families, parks, quieter stays | Lake and park setting; fewer restaurants than the center; good for downtime |
| Maksimir | Green space, calmer base | Known for Maksimir Park and the stadium, quieter than the core |
An excellent holiday destination, this city is rich in culture and history, and its historic center is walkable, with only a few hilly streets in the Upper Town.
It is also a destination to consider year-round. Zagreb was named Best Christmas Market in Europe three years in a row (2016–2018), making the city especially popular during Advent.
The trick to finding the best place to stay in Zagreb is to decide what your top priorities are!
You may be looking for a place to stay based on amenities, or you may prefer to choose your hotel based on its proximity to the city’s tourist attractions. If you’re visiting Zagreb for medical or dental treatment, being close to your clinic may be a priority.
Regardless of what you are looking for, there are many accommodation options in Zagreb, Croatia.
It can be overwhelming figuring out where to stay, though. That’s why we compiled a list of suggestions for where to stay in Zagreb during your vacation in the heart of the city.
Best Areas To Stay In Zagreb For First-Timers, Families, And Nightlife
When deciding where to stay in Zagreb, it’s essential to get a feel for the city’s best neighborhoods. This lets you pinpoint the best area to stay in Zagreb for your specific trip.
Are you on a business trip? Is this your annual vacation with the kids? Are you a backpacker and looking for budget accommodation options in Zagreb? This will determine which Zagreb neighborhood is best for you.
Below, we’ve written a brief description of the main tourist areas in Zagreb. Of course, there are many other areas in Zagreb where you could stay, but these are among the most popular and convenient for visitors.
Lower Town (Donji Grad): Best For First-Timers And Easy Transport
Generally regarded as the best place to stay in Zagreb if it’s your first time in the city, the Lower Town (Donji Grad) makes up half of the Zagreb city center. This area’s beating heart is Ban Jelacic Square, a popular meeting place and focal point in central Zagreb.
Monumental Austro-Hungarian architecture, grand avenues like Ilica Street, and several fantastic museums characterize the Zagreb Lower Town. This is where most hotels in central Zagreb are located.
Upper Town (Gornji Grad): Best For History And Evening Atmosphere
The Upper Town encompasses the other half of the Zagreb city center. Also known as Old Town or Gornji Grad, this area doesn’t have as many Zagreb accommodations as its Lower Town counterpart, but it makes up for it with numerous attractions, nightlife, coffee shops, and shops.
Tkalciceva runs through the Upper Town from Ban Jelacic Square below in the Lower Town and is lined with numerous bars, pubs, and restaurants. When staying in this Zagreb area, you can go for a stroll on a cobbled street, admire gorgeous historic buildings, and immerse yourself in Zagreb’s best nightlife.
Kaptol: Best For Cathedral Sights And A Local Feel
Although it’s technically a part of the Upper Town, it’s worth taking a closer look at the Kaptol neighborhood—the other part is known as Gradec. This area is home to many budget accommodations in Zagreb, including hostels, cheap hotels, and apartments. It’s a strategic place to stay if you plan to explore Zagreb’s nightlife in the evening and its historic attractions during the day.
Historically, the city’s religious center, Kaptol, is home to Zagreb Cathedral. Two of Zagreb’s most-visited museums—the Museum of Broken Relationships and the Zagreb City Museum—are in the Upper Town.
British Square (Britanski Trg): Best For Markets And A Trendy Vibe
The hipster neighborhood of central Zagreb, British Square, is a fantastic place to stay if you’d like to mingle with Zagreb’s alternative youth, artists, and other subcultures. Called Britanski trg in Croatian, this area is also home to one of Zagreb’s last open-air farmers’ markets. It’s a great place to browse for antiques, stock up on fresh produce for a picnic, or enjoy the neighborhood’s undeniable charm.
British Square is close to other popular areas in the city, connected to both the Upper and Lower Towns by public transportation and walkable streets.
Jarun: Best For Families, Parks, And Quieter Stays
If you’re traveling with children or want more peace, Lake Jarun is arguably the best area to stay in Zagreb. Located southwest of the city center, this mainly residential area is famous for the verdant Jarun Park, home to the sprawling Jarun Lake. Also known as the “Zagreb Sea,” this large lake is a beautiful place to relax in nature, swim, or go boating.
This tranquil neighborhood also offers a small selection of bars and restaurants, although far fewer than in the city center. Another mention-worthy attraction nearby is Arena Zagreb (and the Arena Centar shopping complex) in Lanište, just across the Sava from Jarun.
Maksimir: Best For Parks And A Quieter Green Base
This area is best known for Maksimir Park and Stadion Maksimir (football stadium), with a mix of residential streets and a quieter, greener feel than the city center.

Editor’s note: My family and I stayed here in December 2022. It was the rudest check-in experience I have EVER had in the 22 years of traveling to Croatia – in fact, any place I have traveled. The breakfast area is a disaster. First of all, you have to queue to get a table, and there are far fewer tables than guests. The food is a rip-off at 20 euros per guest, and the staff were frantic trying to fill the orders, which went faster than they could bring them. The layout of the chairs meant that my chair was banged into a dozen times as I tried to sip the weakest drip coffee ever made. Lastly, the elevators are SLOW, and there are only two lifts for all the guests. Several times, we had to take the stairs up and down to our floor. On the day of checkout, we waited 10 mins to get into the lift, so we had to walk down three floors with all our luggage and two kids in tow.
17. Hilton Garden Inn Zagreb – Radnička

This popular Zagreb accommodation is perfect if you are traveling for business. The 4-star Hilton Garden Inn Zagreb – Radnička has a business center and its own currency exchange. Other amenities include a fitness center, bar and restaurants, room service, complimentary breakfast, and free WiFi.
