What Is Blagaj Tekija
Blagaj Tekke was built in 1520, and it is a Dervish monastery. Not only that, but the landscape around the monastery and the place it is set is truly stunning to the eyes.
It’s a good idea to learn more about the Dervish faith before you arrive, if possible. That will help you to get the most out of your visit. Of course, the Dervish are derived from the Sufi Muslims and are famous for the whirling dervish dance. They live humbly and believe in recycling material to make the most of what they have.
Blagaj Tekke itself is a beautiful representation of Ottoman architecture, and it’s still very well preserved today. The monastery sits directly underneath a soaring cliff, and the Buna River flows directly past it, out of a nearby cave. The water is crystal clear and soothingly calm, even during the summer heat. You can take boat trips along the river, which stop at small restaurants to enjoy the local cuisine.
You can go inside the monastery, but you should dress modestly and be respectful at all times. Inside you’ll see even more authentic architecture, and if you head out onto the balconies, you’ll be treated to a beautiful view over the local landscape.
There is an entrance fee to enter Blagaj Tekke, although you’ll rarely find anyone who tells you it’s not worth it! The price occasionally changes yearly, but it is around the 3 Euro mark.
How To Get To Blagaj Bosnia And Herzegovina
A day trip to Blagaj is effortless and a must-do if you’re staying in Mostar. The village is around 12km from the city, and if you have a car or are hiring one, you can quickly get there on your own steam. The drive should take you no more than 15 minutes, although do add five or ten minutes during the peak summer months, when traffic may be slightly more than usual.
You can also take local transport to Blagaj too. The number 11 bus from Spanski Trg will take you directly to Blagaj, and from there, you can easily reach Blagaj Tekke on foot. The bus will take you around half an hour, and it’s a great way to experience the local way of life.
