Cappadocia has two airports most travelers use—Kayseri (ASR) and Nevşehir (NAV)—and the best choice usually comes down to transfer time versus flight availability. I’ve spent time based in Göreme, and the practical reality is simple: NAV is typically the shorter drive to the main Cappadocia towns, while ASR often has more schedule choices and can be easier to match with connections.

This guide compares ASR vs. NAV by distance, typical transfer times, and what to expect from shuttles, taxis, and seasonal flight patterns, so you can book the most efficient route for your trip dates.

Whether you’re seeking the closest airport to the region’s famous attractions or looking for the most cost-effective flights, we’ve got the information you need to make an informed decision.

Cappadocia Airport Options At A Glance

Cappadocia is home to two airports:

  • Kayseri Erkilet International Airport (ASR) and
  • Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport (NAV)

Both airports are close to the main tourist areas of Cappadocia. So, which airport should you choose when flying into Cappadocia?

Kayseri Erkilet Airport (ASR): More Flight Choices

Kayseri Erkilet Airport (ASR) is generally the larger and busier of the two airports used for Cappadocia.

It is located approximately 70 kilometers from Göreme. The airport has regular domestic flights, including routes to/from Istanbul, as well as additional seasonal or schedule-dependent routes.

You can take a pre-booked shuttle/transfer, travel via Kayseri (e.g., from the airport to the Kayseri bus station, then onward to Göreme/Avanos/Ürgüp), or take a taxi/private transfer. Typical transfer time from ASR to Göreme is 1-1.5 hours, depending on traffic and your exact drop-off location. Cabs are more expensive but will get you to your destination faster.

Public “bus” options typically involve traveling via Kayseri city (especially the Kayseri bus station) rather than a single direct airport-to-Göreme public bus, so transfer logistics and timing can vary by operator and season.

Airlines

Airlines serving ASR can include Pegasus Airlines, SunExpress, AJet, Turkish Airlines, and Corendon (routes vary by season and schedule). These airlines operate a mix of domestic routes (including Istanbul) and, depending on the season, select direct international routes on certain city pairs.

Please note that while both airports offer some international flight connections, the range and frequency of these flights are generally lower than at major Turkish airports such as Istanbul Airport.

Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport (NAV)

Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport is roughly 40–45 kilometers from Göreme in Cappadocia.

The airport’s scheduled service typically focuses on Istanbul, with additional routes depending on the season and airline schedules. Most travelers use a pre-booked shuttle/private transfer, or a taxi, from NAV to Göreme; the typical drive time is around 40 minutes, but it varies by traffic and the exact drop-off location.

Airlines Serving Nevşehir (NAV)

Airlines serving NAV include Turkish Airlines, AJet, and SunExpress (route availability varies by season and schedule).

Please note that direct international flights can be seasonal and may be unavailable from NAV at times; international options are generally broader via Istanbul’s major airports.

Private Airport Transfers

It is much like a taxi, except you can book ahead and have a driver waiting for you at the airport terminal. Someone to carry your bags and lead the way, and, best of all, you’ll know the fixed cost ahead of time, no matter the crazy traffic.

Closest Airport To Cappadocia

This section discusses the pros and cons of both airports near Cappadocia, as well as advice on how to choose the best airport in Cappadocia for you:

The Cappadocia region in Turkey is home to two airports. It depends on a few factors, including which one you choose.

Pros And Cons: Kayseri (ASR) Vs Nevşehir (NAV)

Kayseri Erkilet International Airport

Kayseri Erkilet Airport (ASR) is approximately 70–75 km from Göreme, while Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport (NAV) is closer at approximately 40–45 km; NAV is often chosen for shorter transfer times.

If you’re looking for more flight options, Kayseri Erkilet International Airport might be a preferable choice.

+ Pro: Often offers more routes and schedule choices overall, including frequent services on key domestic routes (availability varies by season).

– Con: If your origin doesn’t have a convenient ASR connection, you may need a domestic connection (often via Istanbul, sometimes via other Turkish hubs), which can add time depending on schedules.

Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport

Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport is the closest airport to many Cappadocia bases (including Göreme). It’s smaller than ASR and typically offers fewer scheduled flights, so many travelers choose it primarily for the shorter transfer time.

+ Pro: Only about 30-40 minutes from Cappadocia (these times can vary due to traffic and other factors such as your hotel location).

– Con: Because it is smaller than the other airport, Nevşehir Kapadokya International Airport may not have as many flight options as some travelers would like

– Con: Because it’s a smaller airport, transport can be more limited and often works best with a pre-booked shuttle/private transfer, especially outside peak season.

  1. Hi,

There is no airport in Goreme called “Goreme International Airport”. And also there is no airport in Aksaray too.

I do not know where you got this information, but these airports do not exist.

Additionally, there are no direct flights from Ankara to any of the airports near Cappadocia.

    Hope it helps.

We will be in Istanbul for 10 days. We are considering visiting Ankara and Cappadocia. We are thinking of taking a bus from Istanbul to Ankara, stay there for 1 night, then another bus from Ankara to Cappadocia and stay for 1 night, then fly back to Istanbul.
    What would you recommend?
    Thank you.
