Travel Croatia: Lone Hotel Rovinj, Istria
Ripped from the pages of a flashy design magazine, the multi-award winning Lone Hotel is impressive. It’s as comfortable as it is stylish. Every detail is manicured, and well planned.
The Lone Hotel stands alone as Croatia’s only member of Design Hotels™. It is completely different from any other hotel that we’ve ever stayed in – in the nicest way possible.
Located just a few minutes by car or 15 minutes on foot from the centre of Rovinj, the Hotel is situated perfectly. Not right in town, where all the hustle and bustle is, and instead along the quiet foreshore.
Our arrival was delayed by snow on the road, however, when we walked into the hotel lobby we were very impressed. I now understand what they meant by “design hotel”. Everything matched perfectly and the spaces flowed into one another. We check in and the service at the reception counter was professional, swift, and easy. This in my view is one of the telltale signs of a good hotel.
In addition to the fast check-in, we were taken to our room, and given a brief explanation of the hotel facilities, and room amenities -which included a FREE mini-bar and super fast free wi-fi.
The Room – Bay Suite
WOW. What a suite. Upon entry, I had to contain my enthusiasm. The room was spectacular and the wide open sea view was brilliant.
We were upgraded from a standard room to the Bay Suite, which is a whopping 72 square metres. Included were two large balconies, complete with deck chairs. It was a little too cold to hang out on the balcony the day we arrived, so instead we sat in the comfort of the lounge room. With the curtains drawn, sitting in the ultra modern armchair, meant I could enjoy the views through the crystal clear floor to ceiling sliding doors. Much of the furniture in the room was specifically designed for the hotel including the uber cool & comfortable couches, that the baby donkey had already claimed as his own.
The soft plush carpet underfoot felt so homely and the room had 2 toilets, large bathroom with a rain shower. A very comfortable king size bed, which was an actual king size bed – and not 2 beds pushed together which is common in Croatia!
Mrs. CtD was impressed by the illy coffee machine and set about making coffee before we unpacked. If you like yoga, or you are an inquisitive toddler, there is also a fitness ball & yoga mat provided. Our Baby Donkey took great pleasure in pushing that enormous ball from room to room the entire weekend.
The following days, the weather was warmer, so we took advantage of the front balcony, including ordering a bottle of wine and a cheese platter, which we devoured in the winter sun while admiring the sea views. Then as the evening approached, we moved indoors onto the comfort of the lounge with a glass of wine in hand and enjoyed watching the sun disappear into the sea.
As I have aged, I have to admit I have grown an appreciation for a wellness spa. Specifically a massage. We stayed at the Lone Hotel for my birthday & my gift from from Mrs CtD was a massage in the wellness spa. With my fluffy white robe and slippers on, I made my way from the room, via the elevator down to the wellness spa.
The look and feel of the spa is very welcoming and relaxing. The “design” concept of the hotel continues to flow into this space and is equally as impressive as the rest of the hotel. The wellness spa is quite large at 1700 m2 and offers everything you would expect from a 5-star hotel. Including; swimming pool with hydro-massaging chairs, whirlpool rooms, sauna’s, massage & treatment rooms.
On this day, I opted for the full body sports massage and was not disappointed. The wellness spa offers an extensive number of options, including a selection for teenagers. Once my massage was over, I made my way back to the spa reception area and noticed that there was an area where people were relaxing in chairs that look ridiculously comfortable, eating, drinking and socialising. What I had discovered was the Relax Zone and Vitality Bar. The Vitality Bar offers various drinks and snacks and freshly squeezed fruit & vegetable juices that you can enjoy before or after your treatment.
They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day so every time we stay in a hotel we make sure we try out the breakfast offer. At Hotel Lone, breakfast is a buffet style and this is hands down the best buffet breakfast we have experienced to date in Croatia. They had everything covered including a chef on standby to cook you eggs any way you like.
On our first day the Hotel Lone, Mrs CtD has organised to have lunch with some friends in Restaurant L. Restaurant L offers traditional Croatian and Mediterranean fusion style food. Mrs CtD and I haven’t been to many restaurants in Croatia that aren’t the traditional konoba style, so we were excited to be having a more upmarket experience.
Our lunch menu was as follows:
Lunch started with a glass of Istria’s finest sparkling wine, Misal.
Scallops in a hazelnut crust with salad greens and truffle vinaigrette
Breaded Rabbit saddle neatly rolled, with a vegetable puree, artichoke and morel sauce.
Tonka cream creme brulee, espresso cream and toasted coconut
The food was wonderful. Simply prepared without complicating the quality ingredients. The dining experience was delightful and the service friendly and attentive. On a personal note, I really loved the rabbit as it was cooked perfectly (tender & juicy).
Restaurant E & Cocktail Bar
As the night approached, I observed that lots of guests were arriving to celebrate Valentines day. Since our baby Donkey is a little too young to go out to fancy restaurants, we decided to stay in our suite for the evening. Once he went to bed I organised a couple of cocktails for us from the lobby bar. After ordering the Cocktails, I noticed that Restaurant E had Japanese food available. I knew this would make Mrs CtD day as there is no Japanese food in Zadar and she had been craving it.
The staff were all super friendly, and the waiter organised a sushi / sashimi plate for two and a bottle of Istrian Malvasia to be delivered to our suite.
When staying in a luxury hotel, its always nice to stay indoors and relax. Likewise when you visit Rovinj in the low season as we did, you’ll not find many restaurants are open, so it seems like an obvious choice to order room service. At the Lone Hotel, you may want to skip ordering any main meals through room service, and instead visit the hotels restaurants. The room service menu is small, which would be acceptable should the quality be there – disappointingly it’s not.
On the plus side, the cheese platter and wine, we ordered during the day was excellent, and we recommend you order the same, and enjoy the sweeping views from your balcony, while sipping on a local glass or two of wine.
Beach and pool access
Given it was winter we didn’t make use of the 2 pools at the Lone Hotel, however, many of the guests were relaxing in the freshwater pool in the Wellness Spa. Just outside the hotel set amongst the trees, is a huge swimming pool for guests to use during Summer. In addition, the foreshore was being developed at the time in preparation for Summer. Once finished, the new development will provide access to the sea giving guests a second swimming option. This looks like it will be a great addition to the hotel.
The concept of bringing your dog to stay in your room at a hotel is peculiar to me, however, I have discovered there are many people that like to bring the dog on holidays with them. Lone Hotel has recognised this and provides a service which includes, pet beds and food & water bowls. But never fear, all rooms are specially cleaned afterwards to ensure you’ll never know that the 4 legged guest was there.
Joggers and cyclists
We did notice that there were a number of joggers heading out each day. There is a trail which runs along the sea, for a 10km round trip. Istria and Cycling go well together, with a number of great paths and tracks, and the hotel is very accomodating for your bike and equipment.[taq_review]
Overall our experience at Lone Hotel was overwhelmingly great. The Hotel is contemporary and unique in Croatia. They offer everything you would want from a 5 star hotel and do it very well. If you are heading to Rovinj, this is the place to stay.
