Hilton DoubleTree Zagreb {5 Star city break}

Zagreb DoubleTree Hilton

So you’re planning a visit to Zagreb, the thriving capital city of Croatia – fantastic! I have just the place for you to stay. I’ve been raving on about Zagreb since we spent time there for the cities Advent celebrations including New Years. So at the first sight of spring, we raced back as I kept  hearing that there is no better time to be in Zagreb!

We headed to the Hilton DoubleTree Zagreb, and this is what we thought:

Arrival

I love cookies. So when I was handed three, yes three giant warm welcome cookies on arrival at the Hilton DoubleTree Zagreb, I was smiling from ear to ear. If you stay there, you to will get get one too, every guest checking in is gifted one. The concierge handed all three to me, it was supposed to be one for each of us, but as my Father always used to say “possession is nine-tenths of the law”. Now I never really understood that silly phrase, but just knew it meant, the person holding the item was the boss. So this boss lady ate more than one. I won’t say how many, you’ll have to guess.

The staff were extremely welcoming, and all smiling and very attentive. We joked and laughed and I kind of felt like part of the family when arriving. It’s not very often you feel that way at a big hotel.

Cookies gobbled, we dropped our bags and made a beeline for our room. We were in Zagreb on a mission to see the Mirogoj Cemetery as well as the Maksimir park and the Zoo. Plus we had had plans to catch up with a few friends who live close by.

The room

As we had only planned to stay in Zagreb two nights, we wanted a hotel that was close to public transport, and had plenty of room to accommodate the three of us,  the DoubleTree Zagreb delivered.

The rooms are impressive – and brand spanking shiny and new. The hotel opened its doors in 2012 , and so the Hilton DoubleTree Zagreb is very modern and stylish. There is something about a newer hotel that is just so appealing.

Hilton DoubleTree Zagreb – Comfy and stylish

Every room is equipped with free high speed wifi, which when you’re a blogger is a must! After a few hours drive in the car, we always allow our little baby donkey some free time to stretch his legs. Once in the room, he raced over the floor to ceiling windows and shouted ‘water’! Puzzled I went over to look – yes he was right. Behind the hotel down below is a number of dining areas and several water features. We scored a great view.

I set about making coffee, while Mr Chasing the Donkey kicked back on the giant sofa in front of the TV. I just love when hotels include tea & coffee making facilities and big enough space to relax- it’s like being at home with conveniences like that . Especially when you have kids.

Hilton DoubleTree Zagreb – Huge rain shower and bath

This 5 star hotel has a HUGE bathroom, with a separate bathtub & giant walk-in rainshower. Hello long hot showers, with a fluffy white robe to wear afterwards. Plus the bathroom came stocked with all kinds of treats. If you’re looking for the iron & ironing board or hair dryer you’ll have to open up the wardrobe behind your front door – I say that as it took me a few frantic minutes to find. It was a treat to have a real hair dryer to use with a full length cord, and not those silly ones that attach to the mirror.

Our room was positioned close to the side of the Green and Gold centre which has a nightclub going on till the wee hours. I am a light sleeper so those tunes did keep me wake a little later than I liked. Mr. CtD and the Baby Donkey were snoring away and were unawares, so if you are a light sleeper be sure to ask for a room to accomodate.

Pool, gym & spa

Head to floors number nine and ten. It’s there you’ll find a 12 metre swimming pool, steam room, sauna and a place to work out, all while looking out over the city landscape, and all complimentary.

The DoubleTree has a spa with a big range of massages and beauty treatments available at very reasonable prices. We were far too busy to enjoy a massage on this trip, but the relaxed faces of the people we saw made me green with envy. As they say in Croatia ‘drugi put’ {next time}

Bar Room Service

After a massive day pounding the pavement seeing Mirogoj & the city we were far too exhausted dine out, so room service it was. The food was delivered in record time, which was very handy given how hungry our little guy was. Piping hot freshly made soup and al-dente pasta, saw him satisfied. Room service food is very rarely anything to rave about, and all too often its a sore point of travels for us. Not on this occasion.

In the hotel is a restaurant called ‘OXBO Bar and Grill’, which also has a bar. We ate the very best steak we’ve had in Croatia here, we also sat at the bar after a long day of sightseeing and enjoyed some Croatian wine. The wine list is enormous, and they have a 6 foot wine cabinet to match. We could not decide on what wine to try, so I told the waiter what I liked in a wine – and he promptly delivered me one that matched – perfectly.

When should you go to Zagreb?

All year round. I love my seaside town of Zadar, but Croatia’s capital has loads on offer all year round. If you are in Europe, Zagreb makes a great city break, with loads of carriers flying into the city daily. If you happen to be flying into Zagreb on your way to the coast – stop, and stay a while. You’ll be surprised at just how much you’ll enjoy it.

The DoubleTree has special offers which they run from time to time, you can find a list of current deals on their event booking page. One package that you can book now is the Plitvice Lakes package. Where you’ll stay at the DoubleTree by Hilton Zagreb, with breakfast, as well as entrance tickets to National Park and a driver to take you to and from the park.

Zagreb will keep you busy, don’t miss out on visiting the Dolacs open air market, Museum of broken relationships, Jarun Lake, Mirogoj Park and Cemetery, Maksimir Park and Zoo, Zagreb Cathedral, St Mark’s church, Lotrscak tower, Croatian national theater plus the city’s museums. Plus the city has a list of events that run throughout the year.

And, don’t miss out of the food and bars in Zagreb, especially the Rakija!

Getting to and from the hotel

When you make your reservation ask about their transport options, the DoubleTree can arrange a driver to take you to and from the hotel, and also give you a city card for a small fee.

Upon checkin the team told us to ask for any advice on what to do or see and how to get there. We took them up on that offer the next day, and the young girl at reception was very attentive and gave us some good insider tips (we will share those in another post!) and promptly booked us a taxi which arrived within minutes.

The DoubleTree Zagreb is located in the cities business district, a short two kilometre walk or tram ride  into the main square where all of the action is. Plus there are loads of choices for shopping and eating in the the Green & Gold complex next door.

The staff at the concierge desk can also phone you a taxi if you prefer, and you should let them book it for you as the rates with the company they use are 50% cheaper than those if you book it direct. As a guide this is how far the hotel is from the main attractions.

  1. Thanks Esther but it needs to be within the post. The idea is that people will see your post. See the badge / link and join in the fun. Sorry, but we will have to keep one set of rules for everyone.

  2. That pool looks amazing and I would love to take a shower in that massive bathroom. Any hotel that starts your visit off with a cookie is good in my books.

    1. Yes, and I got to shut that big door and pretend my kid was not banging on the door to be let in for 3 whole mins…

  3. This looks like a very beautiful hotel! I love the large windows in the room. And the bathroom is very spacious!

  4. Looks Beautiful ~ for sure we would stay there we are always looking for something big enough to accomodate 3 or 4 and always with a pool and room service both a must for the kids ~ great info thanks so much!!

  5. Wow, I was already hooked on wanting to stay at this hotel simply because of those delicious looking cookies but then I kept reading and drooling at the pics. The rooms are so spacious and that bar is calling my name. Oh wait I meant the pool… no yes, it was the bar. 🙂 My husband and I both would thoroughly enjoy a stay here, great info!

  6. It’s been ages since I’ve stayed at a Doubletree, but I remember their yummy cookies very well. This looks like a fab hotel and one that I’d like staying in, even without the cookies. I will make a note of not telling my family about the cookies so they will never suspect when they don’t get theirs.

  7. Oh those cookies! I stayed at one in London and we cheekily asked for seconds and they obliged!

  8. What an amazing room! I love the pillow with ‘sweet dreams’ and the spa is seriously inviting… I loved Zagreb, especially the Museum of Broken Relationships! Thanks for sharing!

  9. This place looks nice but we tend to go more for historic rather than sleek and new:) However, the Doubletree cookies, yum!

  10. I don’t even need to read the rest of the post – this hotel had me at the cookies. Now I just need to make sure if I go with a group, I do the check-in for everyone.
